Gender Equality Is a Human Right
Gender equality and women’s rights have increasingly been at the forefront of world news – something long overdue. To varying extents around the world, women still lack equal power and rights as men – by law, education or macro-economics. Join Givv and help us achieve SDG #5 by providing women equal access to education, health care, jobs, and representation in political and economic decision-making.
What’s the Goal?
UN Goal #5 is to achieve global gender equality and to empower all women and girls.
Why Does it Matter?
Gender inequality is age-old problem with fresh repugnance. While many of the most blatant examples of gender discrimination are no longer tolerated in most areas, insidious and often unintentional sexism continues to stymie real progress toward gender equality. In many regions today, women remain subjected to the most offensive forms of gender inequality. In all forms reprehensible, gender discrimination impacts all people – either personally, through family, or more broadly through constraining the positive economic and social contributions of women.
How Does Inequality Affect Us?
Denying women and girls a quality education, barring them from equal representation in government, and excluding them from decision making affects a nation’s economic growth and social development. Women comprise more than fifty percent of the world’s population. Removing obstacles to their participating equally in education, government, and the labor force will increase national growth rates as well as further basic human rights.
Can We Achieve This Goal?
Yes, and the solution is straightforward. Governments, communities, and individuals must provide women and girls equal access to education, health care, decent work, and representation in political and economic decision-making processes. On an individual level, each person should promote the idea that gender equality is a fundamental human right, and anything less is a violation of human dignity.
What Can I Do to Help?
Support academic equality for women. Encourage your classmates – male and female – to join the fight for fair access to sexual, reproductive, and health services. Continue to address the biases and beliefs that create systems of inequality. Educate yourself on the statistics and stories of inequality, and do your part to support fairness and prevent exploitation in the workplace, government, legal system, and community. Now, you can also help further gender equality through Givv.
