Powering Lives with Sustainable Energy
Fossil fuels facilitated massive industrial growth in the world, but this was neither without a cost or a limitation. Petroleum products have left a lasting environmental footprint, and while peek oil is point decades past, the vehicular infrastructure built for fossil fuels will take decades of widespread engagement from both businesses and legislators. To ensure a healthy future, we need to work together to create new ways in which global access to clean energy, energy efficiency, and renewable energy are developed.
What’s the Goal?
UN goal #7 is to help establish global access to affordable, stable, sustainable, clean, and modern energy sources.
Why Does it Matter?
Sustainable energy is a key to the global economy, from creating lucrative jobs to helping pivot toward more sustainable and eco-friendly production of food crops. Currently, close to 3 billion people do not have access to clean energy for their cooking needs or are exposed to air pollution daily.
Why Is Affordable and Clean Energy So Important?
The current world energy resources produce vast amounts of pollution, among other consequences. According to www.un.org, “Indoor air pollution from using combustible fuels for household energy caused 4.3 million deaths in 2012, with women and girls accounting for 6 out of every 10 of these.” This may be attributed to incorrect or inadequate ventilation for kitchens or cooking areas. It is imperative that we develop new, clean, and affordable sources of energy and make them available globally to prevent unnecessary deaths, pollution, and other natural and economic obstacles.
Can We Achieve This Goal?
We can achieve this goal if we cultivate and design new ways to bring global leaders within the energy sector together to help finance and invest in affordable and clean energy systems.
>What Can I Do About It?
Though an issue of massive scale, as one individual you can still help in many small and simple ways. Givv provides a new way for you and your friends to make a tangible difference on issues that you care about. This works through an easy-to-use app that uses your computer’s idle power to raise funds, which you can then direct to the clean energy-supporting nonprofit organisations of your choice. Givv makes this all possible without you ever spending any money.
Goal 7 Facts & Figures
The number of people globally who do not have access to electricity, 50% of which live in sub-Saharan Africa
The percent of global greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change that can be attributed to fossil fuels such as coal, oil, or gas
The amount the world needs to invest in energy infrastructure per year by 2030
Goal 7 Targets
- By 2030, provide global access to affordable, clean, and renewable energy.
- By 2030, foster international collaboration on areas such as clean energy development, energy efficiency, and energy technology advancements.
- By 2030, ensure there is a support system in place for sub-Saharan Africa, south Asia, and other small or developing countries or states that will help to build infrastructure and to upgrade technology.
